The Best Commuter Towns to NYC (2026 Guide)

🚆The Best Commuter Towns to NYC (2026 Guide) from a former commuter

By Ally | Living in NJ 411

If you’ve been craving more space, a quieter pace, or just a change from city living—but still need access to New York City—you’re not alone.

This is one of my favorite conversations to have with clients, because New Jersey gives you options. Really good ones.

You don’t have to give up convenience to get a better lifestyle—you just have to know where to look.

Let’s break it down 👇

🚆 If Your Priority is the FASTEST Commute

Hoboken

If getting into Manhattan quickly is your top priority, Hoboken is hard to beat. The PATH train can get you there in about 10–15 minutes.

It’s lively, walkable, and perfect if you still want that city energy when you step outside your door.

Weehawken

Right next to Hoboken, but with a slightly calmer feel. You’ll find incredible skyline views and multiple ways to get into NYC, including ferry and bus.

🌆 If You Want Lifestyle + Culture

Montclair

Montclair has such a unique vibe.

Great restaurants, coffee shops, local events, and a strong sense of community—all with direct access into NYC.

It’s one of those places people fall in love with quickly.

Jersey City

If you’re not quite ready to leave the city feel behind, Jersey City is a great option.

You still get that energy, plus PATH access and incredible waterfront living—often with more space for your money.

🏡 If You Want a Suburban Feel

Summit

Summit offers a beautiful downtown, a polished feel, and direct train access into NYC.

It’s a great blend of convenience and classic New Jersey charm.

Westfield

Westfield is known for its tree-lined streets, vibrant downtown, and strong sense of community.

It’s the kind of place where people really put down roots.

Ridgewood

Ridgewood has a quieter, neighborhood feel with a charming downtown and an easy commute into the city.

💰 If You’re Looking for More Value

Bloomfield & Belleville

These towns are gaining popularity for buyers who want access to NYC without stretching their budget too far.

Newark

Newark—especially downtown—is seeing major growth and development.

With direct train access into NYC, it’s a great option for buyers thinking about long-term potential.

🌿 Hidden Gems I Love

Maplewood & South Orange

These neighboring towns have such a warm, welcoming feel.

They offer walkable downtowns, community events, and direct train access into NYC.

Morristown

Morristown brings a fun energy with its downtown, restaurants, and social scene—while still being commuter-friendly.

💡 What I Tell My Clients

There’s no “perfect” commuter town—just the one that fits your life best.

It usually comes down to:

  • How often you’re commuting
  • The kind of lifestyle you want day-to-day
  • How much space matters to you

Some people want to be as close to NYC as possible.
Others are happy commuting a little longer to gain more space and a different pace.

Both are completely valid—it just depends on your priorities.

❤️ Final Thought

This isn’t just about buying a house.

It’s about how your life feels when you walk through the door at the end of the day.

And the right town? It makes all the difference.
